Origin and history
The estate of Clermont is a former colonial plantation located on the island of La Réunion, in the French overseas department of the southwest Indian Ocean. Located in Saint Paul, more precisely the Ruisseau, near Bois-de-Nèfles, this estate illustrates the island's agricultural and colonial history. It has been included in the additional inventory of Historic Monuments since 30 September 1993, covering the retaining walls and the interior of the main house.
The site, located on Rue Évariste-de-Parny, reflects the architecture and organization typical of the colonial agricultural houses of La Réunion. These areas were at the heart of the local economy, based on crops such as sugar cane, and structured the social and economic life of the island during the colonial period. Their preservation makes it possible today to understand the historical and cultural dynamics of this ultramarine region.
The listing of the Clermont Estate as a Historic Monument underscores its heritage importance. This status not only protects the buildings, but also the landscape and architectural elements that make up the site, offering a material testimony of the history of Réunion. The specific mention of the retaining walls and interior of the main house in the registration order highlights their historical and aesthetic value.
