Origin and history
The Bénaudière estate, located in Saint-Georges-sur-Loire in the department of Maine-et-Loire, is a castle dating back to the 16th century. It belonged initially to the lords of Serrant, a noble family of the region, before passing into the hands of the high bourgeoisie of Angelvin from 1601 onwards. These new owners, from the bourgeoisie of Angers, profoundly transformed the estate between the end of the seventeenth and the beginning of the eighteenth century, giving it its present organization.
The chapel of the estate, built in the 16th century, is one of the oldest elements still visible today. The castle and its estate, including the houses and chapel, were listed as historical monuments by order of 4 December 1996. This classification recognizes the heritage value of the ensemble, which combines Renaissance architecture and subsequent developments reflecting the evolution of tastes and uses among the local elite.
The Bénaudière estate thus illustrates the social and architectural history of Anjou, moving from the hands of the aristocracy to those of a rising bourgeoisie. Today, the site remains a private property, and its current use (visits, events, accommodation) is not specified in the available sources. The location of the castle, although documented, is estimated with average accuracy according to current geographical data.
