Origin and history

Bourdonnaye Castle, located in Carentoir in Morbihan (Bretagne), is a 4th quarter-century building built between 1893 and 1898 by the Marquis de la Bourdonnaye. It replaces an old castle whose remains prior to the 16th century remain near the communes. This new castle, of classic style, is part of a landscaped composition including garden, chapel, park and ponds. Its architecture, made of stone and stone cut (granite, shale), includes a central body flanked with two symmetrical wings, with slate roof and harped elevations. The estate illustrates the land restoration methods of the Breton nobility at the end of the 19th century, mixing architectural modernity and symbolic preservation of ancient traces.

The site was the scene of an episode of the Chouanneries wars: on May 8, 1796 (19 floral year IV), General Warrant Officer Simon, party of Rennes, faced Chouans there before continuing them to Ploërmel. This fact of early weapons precedes the construction of the present castle by more than a century. The provisions of the old castle, visible on the 1825 cadastre, influenced the establishment of the new building, which dominates a domain of 30 cadastral plots, including stables, lower yard, rectory and park factories (grotte, calvary, walls of enclosure).

Partially listed as historical monuments since 20 March 2023, the estate protects notably fortifications, the castle, stables (excluding modern additions), the chapel of Haute-Bouexière, as well as the entire park and its landscape elements. Still owned by the Bourdonnaye family in 2024, it embodies the sustainability of a Breton aristocratic heritage, combining medieval heritage, neoclassical reconstruction and contemporary management. The architectural quality of the castle, underlined by its inscription, makes it a remarkable example in the region.
