Origin and history

The estate of the Fedial is a property acquired in 1856 by Jules Jaurès, father of Jean Jaurès, in the territory of Castres, Tarn. At that time, the site already included agricultural buildings, to which was added a house built around 1860. The Jaurès family then left their housing in the city centre to settle there, and it was in this context that Jean Jaurès spent his childhood. This estate, marked by family history, became a symbolic place after the death of Jules Jaurès in 1882, whose coffin was deposited under an appentis still intact today.

In 1964, the estate was included in the inventory of historical monuments, recognizing its heritage importance linked to the memory of Jean Jaurès. A fire in April 1965 damaged some of the buildings, but restoration was undertaken by the owners to preserve the site. The entire estate, including land and buildings (Cadastre E 209, 210, 213, 214, 216, 248), has remained protected since that date.

The property illustrates both 19th century rural architecture and French political history, through the figure of Jean Jaurès, an iconic socialist. Although partially open to the public, its access and current uses (visits, events) are not specified in available sources. Its exact address, 163 Route de la Fedial à Castres, allows to locate it in a rural setting close to the city.
