Origin and history
The estate of La Poncetière is a former sugar house located in Saint-Paul, on the island of La Réunion. Built between the late 18th and 19th centuries, this estate illustrates the transformation of the land of this region into sugar cane fields, a major agricultural transformation of the early 19th century. This change was facilitated by the creation of an irrigation canal, later called the Lemarchand Canal.
In 1828, a sugar factory was officially established in La Plaine, marking its central role in the island's sugar economy. This site, which retained its original architecture and organization, was fully included in the additional inventory of Historic Monuments on January 9, 2008, recognizing its heritage importance.
In 2005, the estate was sold to Gabriel Martin Hospital in Saint Paul, to build the new hospital in the west of the island. This transition marks a significant change in the use of this historic site from a farm to medical and public use. The estate remains an architectural and historical testimony of the colonial era and the sugar economy of La Réunion.
