Origin and history

The Domaine de la Seiglire, located in Saint-Louis-de-Montferrand en Gironde, is an architectural complex composed of a house, outbuildings and a park, located on the edge of the Garonne. Mentioned from the 18th century under the name of the Côte de Caillou, it belonged to Bordeaux parliamentarians before passing, in the 19th century, into the hands of the magistrate M. de la Seiglière, who gave him his present name. The buildings, organized around a courtyard and a garden, date mostly from the 2nd quarter of the 18th century, although some elements, such as the remains of a renovated farmhouse or house, could go back to the 17th or even 16th century.

The main house, built of cut stone and covered with hollow tiles, is distinguished by its curved pediment and its interior decorations (lambria, fireplaces, stuccos) dating from the late 2nd quarter of the 18th century. The outbuildings, including cellars and dwellings, underwent renovations in the 19th century, including the reconstruction of housing near the entrance gate and parts of the cellar. The estate, partially destroyed by a storm in 1999, saw some restored elements, such as the fence wall decorated with false bays. Its inscription to historical monuments in 1987 protects an emblematic home of the girondin heritage.

The spatial organisation of the estate reflects its past use: a driveway parallel to the road leads to the courtyard, where houses, cellars and dwellings are built around a well and portals decorated with pilasters. In the east, a garden once extended to a pier near the southern gate, showing its connection to the Garonne, a major communication route. The exterior decorations, such as the bosses or ball damping, as well as the long-paned roofs, illustrate the architectural styles of the 18th and 19th centuries. The interiors, distributed by a corridor or enfilade, retain original elements, although the western part was redesigned in the late nineteenth century.

The estate of the Seiglire embodies the evolution of a rural property linked to the Bordeaux elite. In the 18th century, parliamentarians made it a country residence, while in the 19th century, M. de la Seiglire, a magistrate, made significant changes. The remains of an ancient farmhouse and the traces of successive changes underline its complex history, between medieval heritage and modern adaptations. Today, although some outbuildings are in poor condition, the site remains an architectural and historical testimony of the Gironde, marked by its heritage inscription.
