Origin and history

The Plaisance à Grane estate, located in the Drôme region of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, is a monument dating back to the 4th quarter of the 14th century, with major transformations in the 16th and 17th centuries. It consists of a village castle, an isolated strong house, a landscaped park and hydraulics. This site illustrates the architectural and landscape evolution of a medieval seigneury that became a domain of pleasure in modern times.

Originally, the medieval castle of Grane, built at the end of the 14th century, belonged to the Counts of Poitiers-Valentinois. In 1404 Louis II de Poitiers-Valentinois, without a male heir, bequeathed his possessions to King Charles VI, a dolphin of Vienna. The castle was then the scene of family conflicts: in 1447, Jean de Poitiers, seigneur of Saint-Vallier, took Louis II hostage with the complicity of his brother, the bishop of Valencia. In ruins after centuries of war, King Louis XI ordered its restoration between 1477 and 1516.

In the 16th century, the estate passed into the hands of Diane de Poitiers, a favourite of Henri II, before being ravaged by the Wars of Religion. In 1574, the Protestant leader Montbrun seized the castle, triggering a repression by the Duke of Montpensier with an army of mercenaries. The feudal walls were dismantled at the end of the century. The Rabot family, nobility of robe, united the seigneury in the early 16th century and undertook renovations after 1644, notably in the village castle, with a monumental staircase and 17th century woodwork.

The fortified house, dating from the late 14th century, presents a quadrangular plan flanked by towers and preserves post-fire murals (geometrical motives). The park, fitted out in terraces with a hydraulic network, reflects the influence of Renaissance gardens. In 1792 the lawyer Pierre-François Duchesne acquired the estate. The ensemble was declared a historic monument in 1999, protecting its architectural, landscape and hydraulic elements.
