Origin and history

The Domaine de Roberty, located at the Pontet in the Vaucluse, is one of the last major agro-industrial estates installed in the 19th century in the Avignonese crown. Attested in 1578, it was enlarged in 1769 and bought in 1821 by the brothers Charles and Joseph Thomas, who developed the silk and garance industry. The mansion, built in 1773, preserves an interior decoration of the nineteenth century, including a panoramic wallpaper depicting the hunting of Compiègne.

In 1850, Charles Thomas created Roberty's racetrack, which became one of the most famous in Provence under the impulse of his son Joseph. The Pontet stable, associated with the Hippic Society of Avignon founded in 1856, organizes races there until 1934. After World War II, the racetrack temporarily hosted meetings in Nice before the construction of the Cagnes-sur-Mer racetrack.

Ranked a Historic Monument in 1993 and 2006, the 125-hectare estate includes stands, studs and a protected green space since 1972. He is famous for having hosted in 2004 the world record of jumping obstacles to raw. Despite several sales attempts since the 2000s, it remains an emblematic place for horse racing and regional sporting events.

Today, the hippodrome offers flat races, obstacles and trot races, as well as events such as the cross-country UNSS or rallies. Its annual budget of €370,000 is partially subsidized by local institutions. The estate, private property, remains a heritage and real estate issue for the commune of Pontet and the region.
