Origin and history

The Domaine de Villarceaux, located in Chaussy in Val-d'Oise, is a vast 800 hectare complex including two castles, a golf course, a farm and wooded areas. The historic site, surrounded by a park of 70 hectares enclosed by walls, houses a Renaissance garden, water rooms and two castles: a 13th century mansion and an 18th century Louis XV castle. Ranked a historic monument since 1941, it has been labeled Ecological Green Space since 2012.

The lower castle, of medieval origin, was transformed into a residence of pleasure in the Renaissance. In the 17th century he welcomed Françoise d'Aubigné, future Madame de Maintenon, invited by Louis de Mornay, Marquis de Villarceaux. He made there a nude portrait of the Marquise, now exhibited in the upper castle, built between 1755 and 1759 by Jean-Baptiste Courtonne for the Marquis Charles-Jean-Baptiste du Tillet.

The gardens, restored by Allain Provost in the 1990s, blend French and English styles, with a virtuegadin adorned with Italian statues, a large pond and 16th century d ́eau beds. The estate, which has been managed ecologically since 1989 by the Île-de-France Region, uses geothermal and lumbriculture, and serves as a refuge for a diverse fauna (deer, herons, squirrels).

The park, classified as a remarkable garden in 2004, offers free or guided tours from April to October. Formerly owned by aristocratic families (Roussel, Cartier, Tulle de Villefranche), it was restored under the direction of Pierre-André Lablaude, chief architect of historical monuments. Since 2015, access is free, with a dedicated mobile app since 2025.

The estate also hosts cultural events (concerts, exhibitions, historical reconstructions) and artist residences. The chapel of Saints-Michel-et-Antoine, restored in 2013, and the communes of the Renaissance mansion complete this exceptional heritage, witness to the architectural and landscape evolution of the French Vexin.
