Origin and history

The castle of Cumond, built between 1700 and 1702, replaces an ancient medieval house on a seigneury attested since the fourteenth century. It adopts an H-shaped plan, with a central body framed by two pavilions, and triangular pediment windows. The charmille in front of the castle, planted at the end of the 18th century, and the landscaped park, designed at the end of the 19th century by landscaper Bühler, complete the estate.

The seigneury of Cumond, originally linked to the sires of Cumont, knew several owners, including the families of the Cropte de Bourzac (in 1600) and of Arlot de Frugie (in 1664). Jacques d-Arlot, owner in 1702, was responsible for the construction of the present castle. The estate, registered as a historical monument in 2005, includes the communes, the park and a driveway of charm, reflecting its architectural and landscape evolution.

The commune of Cumond, which became Saint-Antoine-Cumond in 1924, merged in 2017 with Festalemps and Saint-Privat-des-Prés to form Saint Privat in Périgord. The castle, a symbol of this local heritage, is associated with a regional history marked by hospital wards, such as that of Aubeterre, founded in the 12th century under the episcopate of Renaud de Thiviers and transferred to the order of St John of Jerusalem in 1775.
