Origin and history
The Domaine rural du Cher, located in Sarran en Corrèze, is an agricultural complex whose origins date back to the early 19th century. The oldest preserved element is the barn-stable, dated precisely from 1811, of auvergnat type, characteristic by its abutment to a slope allowing direct access to the floor. This building illustrates the rural construction techniques of the time, adapted to topographical constraints and local agricultural needs.
The current configuration of the estate results from partial reconstruction in the mid-19th century. In 1865, after the demolition of the earlier buildings — attested to on the cadastre of 1829 and described in 1770 — a new house was erected. The latter is distinguished by its almost cubic volume, surmounted by a croup roof, and still houses original interior arrangements, such as a kitchen equipped with a bassière and a vegetable garden, testimonies of the domestic practices of the time.
The hydraulic and landscape developments of the estate, including fountains, canine, basins, terraced gardens and retaining walls, reflect a spatial organization designed for agricultural autonomy and efficiency. These elements, as well as the facades and roofs of the house, were protected by an inscription under the Historic Monuments in 1999, highlighting their heritage value. The barn-stable, on the other hand, embodies the auvergnat rural architectural know-how, adapted to storage and rearing needs.
The location of the domain, reported as approximate (cartographic precision estimated at 5/10), corresponds to Address 1 Le Cher in Sarran, in the department of Corrèze. This site offers a representative example of the evolution of farms between the 18th and 19th centuries, marked by successive reconstructions and constant adaptation to the economic and social needs of the region.
