Origin and history

The Donjon de Craponne-sur-Arzon is an emblematic military construction of the 12th and 13th centuries, characterized by a high square tower pierced with two doors and rare openings (windows or archeries). The vestiges of holes on its structure suggest the ancient existence of a wooden heist, a defensive system typical of medieval times. Integrated into local history, this dungeon played a central role in communal life, notably as a symbol of power and protection.

In 1576 the castle adjacent to the dungeon was demolished, leaving this tower as the only witness to the original fortifications. Its foundations still bear traces of fire attributed to the siege of the city in 1163, an event marking its military history. The tower also served as a prison until after the French Revolution, welcoming prisoners for political or ordinary reasons. Today, it houses a clock and a carillon, and allows the passage of a pedestrian street connecting modern urban spaces.

Ranked a historic monument by decree of 6 December 1949, the dungeon now belongs to the municipality of Craponne-sur-Arzon. Its architecture, combining defensive and urban functions, illustrates the evolution of strategic and social needs between the Middle Ages and the contemporary era. The tower remains a major heritage landmark in the Haute-Loire department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
