Origin and history

The dean of Wissembourg is a historic monument located on 10 Rue du Chapter in the Alsatian city of Wissembourg (Bas-Rhin). Built in 1784, it was part of an architectural ensemble reorganized between 1769 and 1784 by the canons of Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul Abbey, with the intervention of a Parisian architect. This neo-classical building is distinguished by its rectangular plan and its central forebody, both on the street side and on the courtyard side.

Originally designed as a residence for the dean of the chapter, the building experienced several postings after the Revolution. Sold as national property, it will successively house the departmental court, the sub-prefecture until 1871, then the German administration of the Kreisdirektion before becoming again sub-prefecture in 1918. Its designation as historic monuments in 1994 highlights its heritage importance and its link to local institutional history.

Architecturally, the dean fits into the street alignment, reflecting the neo-classical cannons of the time. Its integration into the western space of the abbey, now extinct or transformed, bears witness to the influence of the canons on the town planning of Wissembourg in the 18th century. The building thus embodies both a religious, administrative and architectural heritage, marked by the political upheavals of Alsace.
