Origin and history
The House of the Three Ladies is a medieval dwelling located at 15, rue du Maréchal-Lefebvre in Rouffach, Haut-Rhin. Dated from the 3rd or 4th quarter of the 15th century, it presents a typical architecture of the period: a wooden forebody with corbellation, sandstone sills and chambranles windows, as well as a stoneware door on the ground floor. Its name would come from the three oak poles on the ground floor, symbolically evoking three female figures.
The building combines archaic elements (posts and wooden panels) with more recent features (first floor windows), suggesting a construction around 1468 (date not found but cited by the historian Kraus) or at the beginning of the sixteenth century. In the 18th century, modifications were made, such as the re-drilling of the rear gable windows and the addition of a rump probably replacing the original roof. The house was listed as historical monuments in 1975 for its facades and roofs.
Its architecture reflects the Alsatian construction techniques of the late Middle Ages, mixing stone and half-timber, while its popular name, Aux trois dames, illustrates a local tradition of assigning nicknames to remarkable houses. Today it bears witness to the medieval civil heritage of Rouffach, a city marked by its wine and commercial history in Alsace.
