Origin and history

Badefols-sur-Dordogne Dry Stone Cabin #27 is a circular plan building, measuring about three metres in diameter. Its ground, in elevation of 60 cm from the adjacent meadow, supports a wall in squared bellows. A door to the south, surmounted by a stone lintel, and a window to the east provide ventilation and access. The vault, masked by a wooden floor, is covered by a conical lauze roof, topped by a truncated stone. These huts, linked to the wine industry, served as temporary shelter for workers, their meals or their animals (mules, donkeys, horses).

Ethnographic testimonies suggest a construction mostly dated from the 19th century, without anteriority before the 17th century. Their use reflects the practical needs of winemakers: protection against weather, pause or storage of tools. Registration as a Historic Monument in 1991 (Decree of 27 December) underlines their heritage value, although their GPS location is considered to be satisfactory a priori (note 7/10).

These buildings illustrate a vernacular architecture adapted to the agricultural and climatic constraints of the Dordogne. Their functional simplicity – lack of decoration, local materials – contrasts with their central social role in the work of vineyards. Their preservation provides insight into rural living conditions in New Aquitaine before mechanization.
