Façades, roofs and door of the court: inscription by order of 14 September 1949

Origin and history

The two houses in Beaulieu-lès-Loches date from the 16th century, although the source text initially mentions earlier periods (XII and XV centuries) which do not seem directly related to their construction. These houses are distinguished by their stone ground floor, topped for one of a wooden floor and hounded under a roof slope, and for the other of two wooden floors with gable on street. Their interior has been transformed over time, but their exterior structure retains characteristic elements of Renaissance civil architecture.

These houses are now united by an added 17th century construction, pierced on the ground floor of a door in the middle of the hangar. This addition illustrates a later architectural evolution, while preserving the original identity of the buildings. Their precise location, 4 rue Bourgeoise, and their status as Historic Monument underline their heritage importance in the urban landscape of Beaulieu-lès-Loches, a commune of Indre-et-Loire in the Centre-Val de Loire region.

The source text does not provide information on owners, sponsors or specific historical events related to these houses. Their value lies mainly in their typical representation of the bourgeois or artisanal habitat of the time, where wood and stone coexisted to meet both aesthetic and functional needs. The mention of a Creative Commons license for an associated photo suggests a contemporary interest in its preservation and presentation.
