Origin and history

The cross of Durand is a monumental cross erected in the 16th century, located in the commune of Tiranges, Haute-Loire. This monument, typical of the Christian architecture of the region, belongs to the commune and was inscribed as historical monuments by decree of 23 September 1949. Its precise location is located on the road linking Retournac to Tirenges, in the Haute-Loire department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.

The monumental crosses, like Durand's, played an important role in the religious and social life of rural communities in the 16th century. They were often used as spiritual markers, assembly points for processions, or territorial markers. In the context of the Auvergne of that time, these monuments also reflected the influence of the Catholic Church in the organization of villages and countryside.

The protection of the Durand Cross in 1949 underlines its heritage importance. This ranking preserves this architectural and historical testimony, while providing visitors with an overview of Renaissance rural Christian art. The data available, notably via the Mérimée and Monumentum bases, confirm its status as a communal property and its inscription as a historical monument.
