Remparts of earth, called Fossés des romans (Case D 327, 347): inscription by decree of 31 March 1987

Origin and history

The Fossés of the Romans form a fortified complex located in Marcé, in the department of Maine-et-Loire, in the Pays de la Loire region. This site, dating back to antiquity, is an example of ramparts of earth, characteristic of the defensive buildings of this time. Although its exact use and detailed history remain partially documented, its listing as historic monuments in 1987 underscores its heritage importance.

Land ramparts, such as those of Marcé, were often erected to protect strategic areas or habitats during ancient times. In this region, the local population lived mainly in agriculture, livestock and handicrafts. These fortifications could be used to defend territories, resources or channels of communication, reflecting a structured social and military organization.

Their presence attests to the ingenuity of the construction techniques of the time, adapted to the materials available locally.
