Origin and history

The building on 1 Rue des Arènes in Bourges is a building built in the 2nd half of the 15th century, probably after the fire of 1487 that ravaged part of the city. Its structure reflects medieval construction techniques, with a spatial organization adapted to commercial and domestic activities. The shop, lit on two streets, bears witness to its mixed use, while the absence of a corridor to the courtyard and stairway from the square suggest a pragmatic design, optimizing the available space.

Interior architecture reveals defensive and utility elements. The treasure room, vaulted in cradle and backed by the adjoining wall, communicated with the ground floor bedroom, indicating a concern for the security of property. The stone screw, originally serving the cellar and leading today to the upper floors, ends with a dovecote built in the top of the turret. This detail, typical of the rural and urban constructions of the time, highlights the integration of agricultural functions into the building. The facade, probably with wooden panels under a dardian dressing, illustrates the local materials and know-how.

Ranked a Historic Monument since 1968, the building is protected for its facades and roofs, reflecting its heritage interest. The accuracy of its location is considered poor (note 5/10), and its official address also includes Planchat Square and Rue du Commerce. Owned by a private company, its access to the public is not documented, but its history offers insight into urban life in Bourges at the end of the Middle Ages, between trade, housing and post-fire adaptations.
