Wooden and stairwell staircase (Box 12-13): inscription by order of 9 May 1988

Origin and history

The building at 4 quai Saint-Thomas in Strasbourg is a civil building built during the first half of the 18th century. This building, typical of the Alsatian urban architecture of the time, is distinguished by its wooden baluster staircase and stairwell, elements protected since 1988. Its inscription in the title of historical monuments underlines its heritage importance in the Strasbourg landscape.

The first half of the 18th century corresponds to a period of prosperity for Strasbourg, then free imperial city before its attachment to France in 1681. The buildings of this era reflect the influence of Baroque and classical styles, adapted to the needs of an expanding merchant bourgeoisie. These buildings served both as housing, as places of commerce and as symbols of social status in a city undergoing economic and cultural change.

The inscription of the staircase and its cage in 1988 by ministerial decree marks the official recognition of their artistic and historical value. These elements, characteristic of bourgeois interiors of the Enlightenment century, illustrate the know-how of local artisans in carpentry and woodworking. Their preservation now allows us to study the construction techniques and lifestyles of the Strasbourg elite of the time.
