Origin and history
The Snake Drugs is a remarkable building located at 17 rue des Hallebardes in Strasbourg, in the Great East. Dating from the first quarter of the 14th century, it was classified as a historical monument in 1998. This building is distinguished by a large room of 150 m2 on the ground floor, maintaining its original architectural layout, including six dust-causing windows and a ceiling with exposed beams. Interior decorations include superimposed wall paintings from the 14th and 16th centuries, including a medieval cycle of characters holding musical instruments, a rarity for the time.
The building was discovered during archaeological monitoring during rehabilitation work. Its most emblematic element is the ground floor room, which bears witness to the medieval civil architecture of Strasbourg. The wall paintings, especially those of the 14th century, are of exceptional pictorial quality and offer a rare insight into the cultural and artistic life of Strasbourg in the Middle Ages. A wing in return, added in the eighteenth century, completes the architectural ensemble.
Ranked entirely by decree of 20 November 1998, the building is a significant example of the Alsatian medieval heritage. Its exact address, 17 rue des Hallebardes, is listed in the Mérimée database under the code Insee 67482, corresponding to the municipality of Strasbourg in the department of Bas-Rhin. The accuracy of its location is estimated to be fair, and it is fully protected because of its historical and artistic value.
