Origin and history

The building located at 42, rue du Général-de-Gaulle in Kaysersberg Vineyard is a typical example of 18th-century civil architecture in the Alsatian region. This building, inscribed in historical monuments since 1946, illustrates the penetration of French taste in the Vosges valleys, with a facade decorated with d'acanthes decorations and a false carved key. Its engraved vintage, 1779, indicates a renovation for a merchant whose initials (I S H / M A) are still visible.

The structure combines traditional Alsatian elements, such as a very sharp roof inherited from an earlier building, and French stylistic innovations, such as low arched bays on the ground floor. At the back, an adjacent building in crepe wood, with a corbellation decorated with sandstone twists, bears witness to local constructive techniques. Damaged during the war, the building was restored and now houses a banking agency, while maintaining its historical characteristics.

The designation of historic monuments in 1946 underlines its heritage importance, both for its architecture and for its role in the urban history of Kaysersberg. The house, which was "to the taste of the day" in 1779, also reflected the flourishing commercial activity of the city at that time, marked by the presence of wealthy merchants able to finance such transformations. The engraved initials and carved decoration recall the social status of its owner, probably an influential local economic actor.
