Ensign in carved stone Au Puits Doré, located on the facade: inscription by decree of 13 March 1944
Origin and history
The buildings at 8bis rue at Peterynck in Lille date from the 1st quarter of the 18th century. Their particularity lies in a carved stone sign, named Au Puits Doré, integrated into their facade. This decorative element, typical of the commercial heritage of the time, was protected by a registration order under the Historical Monuments on 13 March 1944.
The location of these buildings in the historic centre of Lille reflects the urbanization and economic activity of the city in the early eighteenth century. At that time Lille, then under French influence recently (Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle, 1668), experienced an architectural boom marked by the reconstruction and beautification of facades, often decorated with signs for shops or inns.
Ensign Au Puits Doré illustrates the importance of visual symbols in pre-industrial daily life. These elements served both as a benchmark for a predominantly illiterate population and as a social marker for artisans or merchants. Their preservation today offers a material testimony of the commercial and artistic practices of the Ancien Régime in the Hauts-de-France.
The available coordinates indicate an approximate address (10 Peterinck Street), suggesting a possible evolution of the urban route or numbering. The accuracy of the location, assessed as fair (note 5/10), invites further verifications for an in-depth historical study.
No information is available on the current use of the site (visit, rental, etc.), or on any historic owners or sponsors. The sources are limited to the data of the Merimée database and the Monumentum platform, without additional architectural details or contexts.
The Creative Commons license associated with the photo of the sign (credit: Velvet) allows a free distribution subject to the author's mention, thus facilitating the valorisation of this minor but emblematic heritage of the old Lille.
