Origin and history

The idea of a royal square and a uniform facade of the docks bordering the Garonne has gradually emerged. In 1729, architect Jacques Gabriel proposed three projects, then built in 1731 the Quai de la Douane and its facades. This initial project, supported by intendant Claude Boucher, was validated in 1746 by the jurats of Bordeaux for the creation of a first quay. At the death of Boucher, his successor, Aubert de Tourny, took over the project with Ange-Jacques Gabriel, son of Jacques Gabriel.

The monumental perspective was completed in 1748 under the impulse of Tourny. It extends the Place Royale (now Place de la Bourse) into a homogeneous architectural order, characterized by a ground floor and an arcade basement, two square floors, and an attic at the Mansard pierced with skylights. The facades, enriched with slits and sculptures, have partially lost their wrought iron balconies, but retain their original frames and lamers. Today, shops occupy the ground floor, sometimes altering arcades.

The building located at 10 Quai des Salinières is part of this complex. Its facade and roof have been protected since 1951, bearing witness to the architectural heritage of Gabriel and Tourny. The original project aimed to create a visual unity between Place Royale and the river, symbolizing the prestige of Bordeaux in the 18th century.
