Origin and history
Hotel Halévy is a private hotel built under the Second Empire by the Halévy family. Located in the 9th arrondissement of Paris, it is representative of bourgeois architecture of the second half of the 19th century. The composer Georges Bizet lived there from 1869 to 1875, a period marked by a commemorative plaque in his honour.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the hotel housed the workshop of painter Henry-Eugène Delacroix (1845-1930) and also served as a home for Edgar Degas. These successive occupations by major artistic figures underline its importance in Parisian cultural history. The building was listed as historic monuments on 30 April 1982, protecting its facades, roofs, as well as certain interior rooms.
The exact address of Hotel Halévy is spread over several streets: 22 rue de Douai, 26 rue Fontaine, 34 rue Duperré and 1 rue Fromentin. This central location in a neighborhood then in full artistic and worldly effervescence reflects its role in the Parisian life of the era. The protected elements include the entrance hall and two rooms decorated on the ground floor.
