Origin and history

The building, built around 1830-1840 in the 9th arrondissement of Paris, illustrates the architecture of the 2nd quarter of the 19th century. Its particularity lies in a large stained glass window of the 1920s-1930s, inspired by the work La Vague d'Hokusai, adding an Art Deco touch to its historic façade. This artistic detail bears witness to the cultural influences of the time, mixing European heritage and fascination with Japanese art.

In the 1920s, the building housed Shanghai, an iconic cabaret of the Crazy Years, reflecting the lively nightlife of Paris. In 1954 it was transformed into a theatre, marking a transition to a more institutional cultural vocation. Since 1979, its ground floor has hosted a private academy dedicated to games, perpetuating its link with arts and entertainment.

Ranked a Historic Monument, the building enjoys protection for its facades, roofs and stained glass windows, as well as for the bathroom of an apartment on the first floor, highlighting the heritage value of its interior and exterior elements. The painter-glass Georges Hagnauer, author of the stained glass window, is the only artist explicitly associated with this monument. The changes made in 2003 and 2020 by ministerial decrees attest to its continuing importance in the Parisian landscape.
