Origin and history
The building located in Oloron-Sainte-Marie, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, dates from the 4th quarter of the 17th century (1697). It is distinguished by a monumental entrance door, classified as Historic Monuments since 1943. This door, the only decorated element of the facade, has a doric order with bosses, typical of local architecture. A smooth shield, surmounted by a lamprequin helmet, dominates the whole, while an engraved inscription attests to the year 1697. The cut pediment, adorned with four-leaf roses and consoles, frames a window whose support is finely carved. The carpentry, studded with decorative motifs, and the sculpted central stand complete this sober yet elegant ensemble.
The building illustrates the Belarusian civil architecture of the late seventeenth century, a period marked by relative prosperity for Oloron-Sainte-Marie, then administrative and religious center of the Béarn. The decors of the door, though modest, reflect the influence of traditional models adapted to local traditions, as evidenced by the stylized bosses and plant motifs. The absence of other ornaments on the facade suggests a desire for discretion, possibly linked to the social status of the owner or to the urban norms of the time.
The 1943 protection concerns only the door, stressing its exceptional character in an otherwise ordinary building. The registered address (5 Pomone Street) is slightly different from the GPS location (Cathedral Square), which could indicate a subsequent urban reshuffle or a SEO error. No information is available on the original use of the building (residential, commercial, etc.) or on its successive owners.
