Origin and history

The church of Sainte-Jeanne-d'Arc, located at 77 rue Vauban in Mulhouse (High Rhine), is a religious building built in the 1930s. It is distinguished by its reinforced concrete and brick architecture, inspired by Art Deco and neo-Byzantine currents. This choice of materials and style reflects the architectural innovations of the inter-war period, while being part of a sacred tradition revisited.

Construction of the church began in 1933 under the direction of architects Paul Kirchacker (departmental architect) and Demant. The first stone was laid that year, and the building was blessed in 1935. However, work was interrupted in 1940, probably due to World War II, and only resumed after the conflict. The stained glass windows, made by the Ott brothers, were installed in 1935, while the choir's paintings, signed R. Haffner, date back to 1946. The church was finally consecrated in 1954.

Ranked a historical monument by decree of 30 October 1990, the church of Sainte-Jeanne-d'Arc illustrates the adaptation of religious forms to the modern techniques of its time. Its inscription bears witness to its heritage value, both for its architecture and for its integration into the urban landscape of Mulhousian. It remains a notable example of the concrete churches built in the 20th century, inspired in particular by the achievements of the Perret brothers.

The building is located in the Wolf district of Mulhouse, an industrial town in the Upper Rhine region. Its exact address, 77 rue Vauban, is listed in the Merimée database under the code Insee 68224. The accuracy of its geographical location is considered satisfactory, with a score of 8/10 depending on available sources.
