Origin and history
The Collège Saint-Étienne d'Eymoutiers is a former church located in the commune of Eymoutiers, Haute-Vienne (New Aquitaine). Classified as a Historical Monument since October 11, 1907, it illustrates medieval religious architecture with elements dating from the twelfth, thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Its bell tower, built around 1100, is one of the oldest remains of the building, while the nave and transept have been redesigned in the following centuries. The college preserves remarkable 15th century stained glass windows, in grey and silver yellow, witnesses of the glass art of that time.
The history of the college is marked by several phases of transformation. In the 13th century the transept was changed, and in the 15th century the choir was rebuilt. Subsequent additions, such as the Romanet chapel in the 16th century or the sacristy in the 19th century, complete the building. The upper part of the bell tower collapsed in 1645, and the choir bell was removed around 1907. These developments reflect the liturgical needs and historical uncertainties of the local community, as well as the continuous adaptation of the building throughout the centuries.
The Collège Saint-Étienne plays a central role in the religious and social life of Eymoutiers. In medieval times, collegiate women served as places of worship, teaching and gathering for the canons and the faithful. The stained glass and architectural modifications bear witness to the importance of this monument as a symbol of piety and spiritual power in the region. Today, it remains an emblematic heritage of the Haute-Vienne, open to visit and preserved for future generations.
