Origin and history
The Church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assumption of Ercé, also known as the Church of Notre-Dame-de-la-Mourède, is an emblematic monument of the village of Ercé, in the Ariège department. Although its present appearance, in Baroque style, dates mainly from the 18th century, it retains traces of a 12th century Romanesque chapel on its posterior façade. Its square bell tower, partly dated from the 14th century, is side by side with the building, revealing a construction in several phases.
The church has a main facade framed with corner foothills facing 45°, typical of Baroque architecture, with a characteristic pediment. Inside, the carved vaults of the 14th century bear witness to a medieval heritage. The building, which has been listed as historic monuments since 1964, benefited from interior renovations in the 2000s and exteriors in 2013-2014, thus preserving its architectural and artistic heritage.
The church houses remarkable furniture, inventoried in the Palissy base, including four paintings and two statues. Among these works, the Apparition of the Virgin to the inhabitants of Ercé, painted by André Regagnon in 1941, illustrates the local attachment to this place of worship. Its Spanish style, visible in architecture and access layout, evokes a Spanish-American influence, rare in the region.
Located 629 metres above sea level, in the centre of the village and served by RD 132, the church is part of a mountain landscape typical of Ariège. Its adjoining cemetery and central position make it a place of remembrance and gathering for the community. The traces of the original Romanesque chapel, oriented perpendicular to the current building, recall the successive transformations of this religious site over the centuries.
The history of the church is documented in local books, such as 900 years of history of Notre-Dame-de-la-Mourède (2014), which traces its evolution since the Middle Ages. Its inscription in the title of historical monuments and its recent development underline its heritage importance in the department, alongside other buildings such as the chapel Saint-Pierre d'Ercé, also classified.
