Origin and history

The Church of the Assumption-de-la-Vierge of Pont-Sainte-Marie, located in the Aube department in the Grand Est region, is a religious building built in the sixteenth century. It is distinguished by its three-nave architecture and an apse, without transept, as well as its sixteen windows. The southern gate, dated 1553, and the bell tower, whose construction began in 1550, bear witness to its late medieval history. The church also houses rich furniture, including 16th century paintings such as a tripartite altarpiece representing Flagellation, Crucifixion and Resurrection, as well as a statuear in oak and polychrome limestone.

The monument has been classified as historical monuments since 16 February 1895. Originally, Pont-Sainte-Marie was the seat of a parish encompassing the villages of Lavau and La Valotte, under the Archpriestry of Troyes. The church, owned by the commune, retains major architectural and artistic elements, such as a wrought iron organ stand dating from 1855 and 17th century stalls. Its current location at 3 rue Georges Clemenceau makes it a central point of local religious heritage.

The building reflects the importance of Marian worship in the region, with works dedicated to the Virgin, such as the Virgin of the Annunciation in golden polychrome limestone or the Convoy of the Virgin. These artistic elements, combined with its preserved architecture, illustrate the spiritual and community role of the church throughout the centuries. Its early ranking (1895) underscores its exceptional heritage value in the Aube department.
