Origin and history

The Assumption-de-la-Vierge church of Rosnay-l'Hôpital, located in the Aube department in the Grand Est region, presents an original architecture on two levels. The oldest lower room preserves elements from the 12th century, including the north and east walls. Cited in 1035, it seems originally dedicated to Thomas de Canterbury. This lower level bears witness to the early medieval constructions, although little remains today.

The upper part of the church, mostly rebuilt in the 16th century, incorporates 15th century pillars and some remains of the 12th century in the northern wall of the collateral. It was consecrated in 1561 by Antoine Caraccioli, then Bishop of Troyes. A tower adorns the western gate on the north side, adding to its distinctive architectural character. The building thus combines Romanesque and Gothic influences, reflecting its evolution over centuries.

The church furniture is remarkable, with rooms dated from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Among them is a polychrome limestone Virgin of Mercy, a statue of the Apostle Peter, and a funerary slab dedicated to Nicolas Lefevre and Simone Gombault. The seventeenth century is represented by a limestone funeral monument, containing the heart of Jacques Berbier du Metz, as well as three statues by Bancelin de Joinville: Saint Thomas Becket, Saint John and Marie-Madeleine. These elements illustrate the artistic and memorial importance of the place.

Ranked among historical monuments as early as 1846, the church is a precious testimony to the religious and architectural history of Champagne. Its state of conservation and the richness of its furniture make it a major heritage site of the Great East, open to the visit and managed by the commune of Rosnay-l-Hôpital. The accuracy of its location is assessed as satisfactory, with an address confirmed by Merimée bases and GPS coordinates.
