Origin and history

The church of the Nativity-de-la-Sainte-Vierge, located in the delegated municipality of La Chapelle-Monthodon (now integrated in Vallées-en-Champagne), is an emblematic 13th century religious building. It illustrates the Gothic architecture of this period, with a nave devoid of low sides, a transept with two unequal spans, and a sober choir. The bell tower, erected at the cross of the transept, also dates from the 13th century and completes the harmony of the whole.

Classified under the title of Historical Monuments by order of 5 October 1920, this church retains remarkable elements, including enamelled earth tiles from the late 15th century. These tiles, scattered in the nave, present a variety of patterns (figures and ornaments) and testify to the decorative evolution of the building long after its initial construction. Their presence suggests later interior arrangements, reflecting artistic and religious practices of the 15th and 16th centuries.

The building, owned by the commune, is part of the heritage landscape of Aisne and Hauts-de-France. Its simple plan, typical of the rural churches of the Middle Ages, met the liturgical and community needs of a predominantly agricultural population. The preservation of its ancient tile and Gothic structure makes it a valuable witness to local history, between medieval heritage and subsequent adaptations.

The administrative location of the church has evolved with the territorial reforms: initially attached to La Chapelle-Monthodon, it now depends on the new municipality of Vallées-en-Champagne. This change reflects the contemporary dynamics of communal consolidation, without altering the protected status of the monument or its historical anchoring in the department of Aisne.
