Origin and history

The Church of the Transfiguration of Cressé, located in the Charente-Maritime department in New Aquitaine, is a Romanesque building dating back to the 11th or 12th century. Although its initial structure has undergone important transformations, including the almost total reconstruction of the nave, it retains characteristic architectural elements such as Romanesque columns on its façade and a square bell tower surmounted by a dome on trunks. Its history is marked by successive degradations which necessitated restorations, while preserving traces of its medieval past.

Classified as a historical monument by decree of 4 September 1913, this church illustrates the architectural evolution of religious buildings in Saintonge. Originally, it consisted of a nave to collateral, a transept, an apse and an apsidiole, but the partial collapse of the vaults reduced its spans from four to three. The bell tower, a remarkable element, rests on a square base containing pilasters and has a floor pierced with double archvolt windows. Its exterior appearance, marked by a wheelpiece, suggests an economic construction, the stone being reserved for major structural parts.

The interior of the church, although redesigned, retains evidence of its initial Romanesque organization. The western facade, without ornamentation, contrasts with the complexity of the transept, whose walls serve as foothills to the bell tower. The external blockages, composed of small bellows, have long led historians to debate the precise dating of the building, although stylistic analyses clearly place it after the 11th century. Today owned by the municipality of Cressé, the church remains a valuable testimony of the Romanesque religious heritage in Poitou-Charentes.
