Origin and history
The Church of the Most Holy Virgin of Fargniers replaces the former Church of Our Lady, destroyed during the First World War. The present building, built on the plans of architect Pierre Guidetti by contractor Ferré, was blessed in 1929 by Bishop Ernest Mennechet of Soissons. Its architecture combines bricks, reinforced concrete and slate, with a concrete molded decor and an octagonal arrow.
Reconstruction takes place in a context of renewal after the destruction of 1914-1918. The church, registered with the Historic Monuments in 2025, is distinguished by its artistic furniture: windows by Louis Barillet, sculptures by Albert Binquet and Gabriel Dufrasne, organ of Coupleux, and bell of Paccard. The concrete balustrade delimiting the square is an integral part of its inscription.
Inside, a single vessel extended by the choir is covered with an elliptical cradle vault. The decor includes an openwork guard body decorated with moulded motifs, framed by angel statues. These elements reflect the influence of modern techniques (armed concrete) and artistic currents of the 1920s, while preserving a traditional religious symbolism.
