Origin and history
The church of Saint-Martin-des-Champs is a religious building located in the commune of Saint-Martin-des-Champs, near Saint-Fargeau, in the department of Yonne (89). Dating from the 15th century, it represents a typical example of religious architecture of this period in Burgundy. Its designation as historic monuments in 1926 was a testament to its heritage importance and the desire to preserve this local heritage.
The church is now owned by the municipality of Saint-Martin-des-Champs. Although the available sources do not specify its current use (visits, rental, worship), its status as a historical monument and its location in a Burgundy village suggest a central role in community life, both religiously and culturally. The churches of that time often served as a place for gathering, prayer and celebration of important events in local life, thus reflecting the social and spiritual organization of the French countryside in the late Middle Ages.
