Western Portal: Registration by Order of 18 February 1926

Origin and history

The church of Vaux-en-Beaujolais, located in the municipality of the same name, is a religious building built in the 12th century. This monument, typical of the Romanesque architecture of the region, bears witness to the medieval heritage of Beaujolais. Its western portal, a remarkable architectural element, was included in the inventory of Historic Monuments by ministerial decree on February 18, 1926, thus highlighting its heritage value.

The location of the church, in the heart of the village of Vaux-en-Beaujolais (Département du Rhône, code INSEE 69257), reflects its central role in community life since the Middle Ages. At that time, parish churches served not only as a place of worship, but also as a gathering point for the inhabitants, marking the social, agricultural and religious rhythms of the local population. Beaujolais, a region dominated by wine and cereal farming, saw its churches play a key role in organizing festivals, markets and collective decisions.

Available data, notably from the Merimée database and Monumentum, indicate that the building now belongs to the municipality. Although its state of conservation and conditions of access (visit, rental) are not specified, its partial registration under the Historic Monuments guarantee legal protection of its Western portal. The accuracy of its geographical location is estimated as "passable" (note 5/10), suggesting GPS coordinates to be refined for an accurate site identification.
