Church of the Carmelites (Cd. E 644): Order of 13 September 1984

Origin and history

The Carmes Church of Ille-sur-Têt is a religious building built in the 18th century. It is distinguished by its typical architecture of this period and its location in the city centre, rue des Carmes. This monument illustrates the importance of religious orders in the urban and spiritual life of the cities of southern France at that time.

Classified as a historical monument by decree of 13 September 1984, this church bears witness to the recognition of its architectural and cultural heritage. Its inscription in the Mérimée base of the Ministry of Culture underlines its historical and artistic value. Official documents, such as the protection file, allow us to study its architectural characteristics and furniture.

In the 18th century, churches played a central role in the lives of local communities. They served not only as a place of worship, but also as a gathering point for the inhabitants. In a region like Occitanie, marked by a strong cultural and religious identity, these buildings often reflected the artistic and social influences of their time.
