Origin and history
The Church of the Sacred Heart of Toulon is a Roman Catholic building built in the early twentieth century. His first stone was blessed on 23 March 1911 by Bishop Guillibert of Fréjus-Toulon, marking the beginning of an ambitious project. As early as June 1912, a solemn triduum was organized in honor of the Sacred Heart, although the work led by Canon Bouisson had not yet been completed. The building was finally consecrated in June 1914 by Bishop Guillibert, before being erected as a parish church in 1920, serving the districts of Pont-du-Bois, des Routes and Valbertrand.
The liturgical life of the church quickly simmers: in 1921, a solemn ceremony celebrated the bicentenary of the consecration of Toulon to the Sacred Heart, attracting a large crowd after a mission preached by the Redemptorists. The organ was installed in 1923, while the large statue of the Sacred Heart, placed at the top of the bell tower in August 1925, was blessed by Bishop Guillibert on April 25, 1926. This statue, facing the city, becomes a significant symbol of the Toulouse landscape. In the following decades, especially after the Second Vatican Council, a part of the original interior decoration — whose pulpit and high altar — disappeared, modifying the original appearance of the building.
On the architectural plane, the church is distinguished by its three-nave structure, initially vaulted in a cradle, now masked by a false ceiling. The arcades, supported by slender columns, separate the naves and lead to an apse with cut strips, topped by a hemispherical vault. This neo-Roman style, sober and monumental, reflects the religious and artistic influences of the time, while being part of the urban fabric of Toulon, a city marked by its maritime history and Christian heritage.
