Origin and history
The church of Saint-André-en-Royans was first mentioned in 1115, but its history was marked by destruction in 1573 during the conflicts between Catholics and Huguenots. This first building, victim of the Wars of Religion, leaves room for reconstruction at the end of the seventeenth century, near the local castle. The architecture then adopts a unique nave, overhanged by a two-storey bell tower crowned with a pediment, typical of the rural religious buildings of the period.
In the middle of the 18th century, work embellished the interior: the ceiling panel was redone, while the section above the choir was decorated with a trompe-l'oeil painted decoration between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. This decoration, composed of rosaceous caissons and symbolic representations in the arch-de-cloister, bears witness to a desire for aesthetic enrichment. The walls, rhythmized by gypsum pilasters, structure the space into five lateral spans, reflecting the influence of the classical styles of the era.
The church, classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 16 January 1990, now belongs to the municipality. Its state of conservation and its history, linked to the religious upheavals of the sixteenth century, make it a major architectural and cultural testimony for the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Localization, noted as "passible" (5/10) in databases, suggests moderate accessibility for visitors.
