Origin and history
Notre-Dame d'Évrecy Church is a Catholic religious building built between the 13th and 16th centuries. Located in the village of Évrecy, in the department of Calvados (region Normandy), it bears witness to centuries of religious architecture. The building preserves Carolingian fragments, probably from the former Abbey of Évrecy, one of the forty monasteries recorded in Normandy at that time. These remains suggest an ancient religious occupation on this site, long before the construction of the present church.
Notre-Dame Church was listed as a historical monument by an order of May 16, 1927, recognizing its heritage value. This classification protects its architectural elements, some of which date back to the Carolingian era, as well as medieval additions from the thirteenth to the sixteenth centuries. Although the sources do not detail the transformations experienced over the centuries, its inscription underlines its importance in the Norman religious and historical landscape.
The available references, such as the works of Arcisse de Caumont in his monumental Statistique du Calvados (1846), attest to the interest in this monument since the 19th century. The church is also listed in heritage databases such as Mérimée and Clochers de France, which document its architecture and history. These sources complement the knowledge of its role in the local community, although little specific details about its foundation or sponsors are available.
