Origin and history
The Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption church of Beaumont-de-Lomagne, classified as a historical monument since 1843, is an emblematic building of the southern Gothic. Its history dates back to the 11th century, when the monks of Granselve, then dominators of the region, gave land to the inhabitants to build a first church. The current building, erected in the 14th century, replaces this early construction and bears witness to the local architectural evolution.
The octagonal bell tower, typical of the Toulouse style, was started in 1390 and completed after 1480, with a brick arrow rebuilt in the seventeenth century. The 14th century monumental gate, partially destroyed in 1794, was restored between 1864 and 1866. Inside, eleven chapels and a choir decorated with a baldaquin illustrate the richness of the region's religious heritage.
The works lasted several centuries: the choir and the lateral chapels, begun between 1280 and 1290, were completed in 1336, while the nave was built during the 14th century. The lateral chapels added in the 16th century and the layout of the entrances in the 19th century (1871) complete this chronology. The church, consecrated in 1430, remains a symbol of Beaumont-de-Lomagne's community and spiritual life.
