Origin and history

The church of Notre-Dame de Boiscommun, located in the eponymous village in the Centre-Val de Loire region, is a religious building whose first parts date back to the 13th century. This century saw the construction of the bedside, the three adjacent spans (including the bell tower), the pillars, as well as the outer cornice and a portion of the triforium. The main gate also dates from this period. These elements, typical of primitive Gothic architecture, bear witness to an ambitious construction phase, probably linked to the demographic and religious development of the region at that time.

In the 14th century, the church grew with the addition of two additional spans, accompanied by their cornices, windows and triforium sections, as well as foothills strengthening the structure. These extensions reflect an evolution of liturgical needs or a growth of the parish community. The Gothic style, then in full maturation, is manifested by wider openings and a more elaborate decoration, marking a transition to the radiant Gothic.

The fifteenth century completed the major works with the last span, its triforium, windows and foothills, as well as two side doors and a stone staircase leading to the structure and to the podium. This period also saw the finalisation of the western facade, integrating defensive or practical elements (such as stairs). A 12th century porch, reused or later integrated, adds an earlier historical stratum. Ranked as a Historic Monument in 1886, the church thus illustrates five centuries of architectural evolution, from novel to flamboyant Gothic.

The building, owned by the commune of Boiscommunal (département du Loiret), embodies the religious and communal heritage of the region. Its early ranking underlines its historical and artistic importance, while its location in the heart of the village — 24 Rue de l'Hôtel de Ville — makes it an identity landmark for the inhabitants. The successive changes, visible in the stylistic details, tell the story of a rural community whose church was the spiritual and social center.
