Origin and history

The church of Notre-Dame de Bretteville-sur-Odon is a 14th-century Catholic building, now in ruins, located in the municipality of the same name. It is located in the Calvados department in Normandy, on the north shore of Petit Odon, about 650 meters east of the Baronie estate. This monument illustrates the medieval religious architecture of the region, although only part of it remains today.

The building bell tower, the only preserved vestige of the church, was listed as historical monuments on 16 May 1927. This protection demonstrates its heritage importance, despite the disrepair of the rest of the structure. The building is part of the historical monuments of Calvados, an area marked by a rich medieval religious heritage.

At the time of its construction, in the 14th century, parish churches played a central role in the life of Norman rural communities. They served not only as a place of worship, but also as a gathering point for social and administrative events. Normandy, then under both French and English influence, saw these buildings reflect the political and cultural dynamics of the time.
