Origin and history

The Church of Notre-Dame de Champagnac is a Romanesque religious building located in the village of Champagnac, in the department of Cantal, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Its construction is mainly in the 12th and 13th centuries, with significant modifications made in the 15th and 16th centuries. This monument illustrates the architectural and artistic evolution of the region through these medieval and renaissant periods.

The church bedside, tower and bell tower were first listed as historical monuments on 1 June 1927. This partial protection was then extended to the entire building by an order of July 16, 2019, recognizing the overall heritage value of the building. These inscriptions testify to the historical and cultural importance of the church in the local and regional heritage.

The Notre Dame church is part of a historical context where religious buildings played a central role in community life. In Cantal, as in other rural areas, these churches served not only as places of worship, but also as social and cultural landmarks. Their architecture, often marked by defensive or symbolic elements, reflected the needs and beliefs of the people of the time, while adapting to the stylistic and technical evolutions of the different construction periods.
