Origin and history

Notre-Dame de Champecret Church is a Catholic church located in the Orne department in Normandy. Built in the late seventeenth century, it is distinguished by its granite and sandstone architecture, including a bell tower, a nave, a transept and a polygonal bedside choir. The building has been listed as historic monuments since 29 August 1984.

The church was commissioned in 1682 by Louis Berruyer, controller of the Tailles under the reign of Louis XIV, to replace a building deemed old and small. The new church, built Place du Vieux-Marché, incorporates architectural elements notable as a monumental stand supported by four columns, accessible by two stairs. The nave is covered with a cradle vault with an apparent frame, while the choir has a vault of ridges.

The walls of the nave and arms of the transept are painted in white, contrasting with the vault and choir painted in grey. A sacristy, adjacent south of the bedside, bears the date of 1776 on the lintel of its door. The Napoleonic cadastre revealed that some adjacent buildings, such as the one north of the bedside, were added after 1825. The church remains today the property of the commune of Champsecret.

The building reflects the religious architecture of the late seventeenth century, marked by a sober but functional structure adapted to the needs of a rural community. Its inscription as a historic monument in 1984 underscores its heritage importance and its role in local history.
