Origin and history

The church of Notre-Dame-et-Saint-Cyprien de Château-Larcher, located in the Vienne department, dates mainly from the 12th century, although 11th century pilasters remain in its lateral walls. Originally, the nave had three spans, subsequently reduced to two, perhaps as early as the 13th century. The choir and apses, destroyed during the Wars of Religion, were replaced by a straight wall in the seventeenth century, after the collapse of the bell tower in 1668. The latter was replaced by a modest belfry erected on the nave.

The western portal, in broken arch, is distinguished by its three richly adorned with animal and plant sculptures, as well as by a modillon cornice. The facade, partly in a diamond-shaped apparatus, incorporates a 14th century tower, vestige of the medieval fortifications of the village. Inside, the nave preserves sober capitals and broken arched doubles dating back to the 12th century, while the arches in the middle hangar could date back to the 14th century. The building also houses a 17th century Baroque altarpiece and a monumental wooden pulpit, carved in the 18th century by Cistercian monks.

Ranked a Historical Monument in 1910 for its tower and portal, the church illustrates the architectural and religious evolution of the region, marked by conflicts (the Hundred Years War, the Wars of Religion) and successive reconstructions. Its strategic location, near the castle overlooking the Cluere Valley, highlights its historic role in the community and defensive life of Château-Larcher.

The village of Château-Larcher, developed around a rocky spur girded by the Clière, was a place of power from the 9th century, with the mention of a Castrum Acardi in 976, including a fortress and a priory. The area, disputed during the Hundred Years War (occupied by the English until 1372), saw its castle rebuilt by the Lusignans in the 13th century, then damaged during the Wars of Religion. The church, linked to these events, thus reflects the political and religious upheavals of the medieval and modern Poitou.

In the 20th century, the building benefited from restorations, notably for its bell rooster (1760, restored in 1972) and its bell of 1877. Archaeological excavations and studies, such as those carried out on the Thorus plateau (dolmens, Neolithic tombs), have enriched the understanding of local human occupation, dating back to the fourth millennium BC. Today, the church remains a symbol of New Aquitaine's religious and historical heritage, integrated into a landscape marked by medieval remains and classified natural sites.
