Origin and history

The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, located in Colombier-le-Cardinal in Ardèche, is a neo-Roman-style building erected in 1872. It was built on the initiative of the Canson family, a local notable, and became the centre of the parish newly established on 24 July of that year. Its architecture, marked by a vaulted nave, a flat bedside and a campanile overlooking the facade, is inspired by the cannons of the late novel.

The history of the church is marked by significant religious and social events. In 1906, during the inventory imposed by the law of separation of churches and the state, the operation was experienced as an intrusion by parishioners, causing a strong collective emotion. The building underwent several renovation campaigns, notably before 1958, then in 1991-1992 for the choir, and in 2020 for the campanile.

Inside, there are remarkable liturgical elements, including an ensemble carved by Marc Hénard (1919-1992), including an African-inspired cross, an altar "face to the people" and a tabernacle decorated with symbolic motifs. The stained glass, with geometric motifs, incorporates figurative scenes such as the Baptism of Christ or the Virgin with the Child. Several statues, including those of Saint Bernadette and Saint Joseph, as well as baptismal fonts decorated with Christian symbols (chrism, Alpha and Omega), enrich the decor.

The parish, initially autonomous, was integrated into successive inter-paroisial ensembles: first the ensemble of Annonay - rural in 1994, then the parish of Saint-Christophe lès Annonay in 2003, before joining in 2021 the parish of Blessed Gabriel Longueville, covering the basin of Annonay. These reorganizations reflect the evolution of local ecclesiastical structures.

The church benefactors from Canson's family are commemorated by a plaque. Among them was Barthélémy Louis de Canson (1835-1898), mayor and builder of the building, and his son Jean de Canson (1867-1907), mayor during the 1906 inventory. Their commitment illustrates the role of local elites in the religious and civil life of the village.

Successive priests such as Alexandre Gonnet (1879-1904) and Isidore Thibon (1905-1911) marked parish history. Their action is part of a context of social transformations, especially during tensions related to the secularization of the Third Republic or post-Vatican II liturgical adaptations.
