Origin and history
The church of Notre-Dame de Guîtres, located in the south of the city near Isle, is a 12th century Romanesque building, formerly linked to a Benedictine abbey founded no later than the 11th century. This abbey, destroyed in 1774, left only its abbey, marked by arches of warheads added to the 13th century and a nave frame of the 15th century. The church, in the shape of a Latin cross, consists of three naves, a circular apse, and a arched transept in a cradle, reflecting successive changes.
Ranked a historical monument in 1901, the church retains a variety of architectural elements: the western facade, richly decorated with archatures in the 13th century, is surmounted by a 15th century gable. The cross of the transept, with a cupola without pendants, and the lateral apsidioles bear witness to the historic importance of this place, once the spiritual and community heart of Guîtres. The lateral walls of the first three eastern spans remain the only remains of the early construction.
The building, owned by the commune, illustrates medieval architectural evolution, mixing Romanesque and Gothic styles. His walkway flanked by absidioles and his slightly ogival openings underline his past role as abbatial church. Today, it remains a major testimony of the Gironde's religious and historical heritage, accessible to the public and integrated into the urban landscape of Guîtres.
