Origin and history

The church of Notre-Dame de Jobourg is a Catholic building of the late twelfth century, located in the former commune of Jobourg, now integrated in La Hague (Manche, Normandy). Ranked a historic monument since 1972, it is distinguished by its Romanesque architecture, with a nave panelled and a choir with arches of warheads. Its built-up bell tower, added in the sixteenth century, rises above a square span, typical of the school of Lessay.

According to a local legend, the church was built on an ancient temple dedicated to Jupiter. In 1165, Richard of The Hague and William of Carbonnel handed it over to Notre-Dame du Vœu Abbey in Cherbourg. The building preserves traces of later gifts, such as that of Jean Lucas, squire and Sieur de The Hague, in 1637, whose coat of arms adorned the key vault of a lateral chapel built around 1636.

The furniture includes classified objects, such as a chalice and its patena, as well as a bentier and an 18th century sundial. The church, now attached to the parish Blessed Thomas Hélye de la Hague, illustrates Norman medieval religious heritage, marked by later transformations such as its Renaissance bell tower.

Its ranking in 1972 underscores its heritage value, both for its architecture and for its history linked to local noble families, such as the Lucas of The Hague. The artist Jean-François Millet described it as a monument where "time sat on it," evoking its timeless character and its anchoring in the Hague landscape.
